Snake Venom: Any Clue for Antibiotics and CAM?
Lately several naturally occurring peptides presenting antimicrobial activity have been described in the literature. However, snake venoms, which are an enormous source of peptides, have not been fully explored for searching such molecules. The aim of this work is to review the basis of antimicrobial mechanisms revealing snake venom as a feasible source for searching an antibiotic prototype. Th...

During the past few years a great deal of interest has been taken in the use of snake venoms in medical treatment. The results obtained in a series of cases treated in the Carmichael Hospital and School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta, have been reported previously by the present authors (Chopra and Chowhan, 1937). Since then, the opportunity for treating a large number of patients suffering fro...
متن کاملNew techniques in antivenom production and active immunization against snake venoms.
Standard methods of commercial antivenom production are costly both in terms of animals, their maintenance, the use of large amounts of expensive venoms and man-hours. The basic technology, which involves the hyperimmunization of horses, bleeding and subsequent purification of the plasma immunoglobulin G (IgG) using salt precipitation and pepsin digestion, has not advanced significantly for man...
متن کاملAntagonistic Effects of Suramin Against the Venom of Snake, Echis Carinatus, on the Circulatory System of Developing Chicken Embryos
Background: The snake, Echis carinatus, one of the most venomous snakes in Asia, possesses a deadly hemotoxic venom. It has been reported that suramin, an anti-trypansomiasis drug, can inhibit the toxic effects of some snake venoms. This study was conducted to evaluate the possible antagonistic effects of suramin against the hemorrhagic activity of the venom from an Iranian snake, Echis carinat...
متن کاملSnake venom as therapeutic agents: from toxin to drug development.
Snake bite injuries and death are socio-medical problems of considerable magnitude. In India a large number of people suffer and die every year due to snake venom poisoning. Snake venom, though greatly feared, is a natural biological resource, containing several components that could be of potential therapeutic value. Use of snake venom in different pathophysiological conditions has been mentio...
متن کاملVenomous snake husbandry in Thailand.
A captive breeding program for venomous Thai snakes was established at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute at Bangkok, Thailand. This was necessary to secure a stable, healthy, and species-confirmed source of snake venom for antivenom production. In 1994, wild-caught specimens were collected, sexed, quarantined, and housed appropriately. All data in this report, with the exclusion of Table 6,...
